Violent groups hijack Sydney Mardi Gras

Groups of young men hijacked this year's gay and lesbian Mardi Gras forcing part of the city to be locked down. This revelation conflicts with the initial official police statement, which praised the good behaviour of those celebrating at the parade. However with no less than five people stabbed by the end of the night, the seriousness of the violence that transpired could not be understated.

Three main groups of troublemakers were singled out - drunk "clans'' of Anglo, Lebanese and Islander youths using the Mardi Gras as an excuse to cut loose. Known to police as "white caps'' because of their headwear, the youths were witnessed intimidating people and picking fights at random with innocent bystanders.

The biggest no-go area was Hyde Park, which had to be cleared and locked down by riot squad officers because of the mayhem that transpired. Some officers said they had been assaulted when they tried to disperse large groups of teenagers roaming through the area.

A total of 39 arrests were made. The violence was not thought to be hate crime related.

Lesbian Teen Sues To Wear Tux To Prom

A 17-year-old senior at Lebanon High School in Indiana is suing the school because her principal refused her the right to wear a tuxedo to the prom. The teen believes wearing a dress conveys a sexual identity she rejects.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana (ACLU) filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis on behalf of the girl. The lawsuit alleges that the prom dress code policy, which dictates that girls wear a formal prom dress, discriminates against students based on gender and the policy violates federal law due to the school receiving federal funds. The ACLU is seeking an injunction that will allow the teen to wear the same attire as males attending the prom.

Home and Away's lesbian romance angers conservative groups

HOME and Away is set to cause controversy and split audiences at the introduction of a lesbian romance at the end of this month. The longstanding Channel 7 soapie has scripted policewoman Charlie Buckton to fall in love with Joey Collins, played by Kate Bell. The couple shares a dance and a kiss, which leads to a blossoming relationship of love over the following five weeks.

Conservative family groups have expressed anger at the plot in the PG-rated show, which carries a large child and teen fan base.

"The plot lines that young kids and teenagers should be presented with should be about really authentic relationships that are not just sexualized," Pro-Family Perspectives director Angela Conway said.

Actor Esther Anderson, who plays Charlie Buckton said she talked to gay friends in the lead-up to filming. Anderson said kissing another girl "wasn't that big a deal", and young viewers would accept the scenes.

"You learn pretty much everything at school," she said. "I don't think it's like I'm lifting the lid on something they don't already know about.

"To me there's no difference - love's love. The fact that your partner's the same sex is no different. You just want to be loved."
