In matches that went down to the wire, women’s world number one Justine Henin and men’s world number thirty-five Dmitry Tursunov have won their respective singles finals at the Medibank International tennis tournament held in Sydney.
Tursunov defeated crowd favourite Australian Chris Guccione in the men’s final held on Saturday in tough circumstances; Guccione only lost eleven points throughout the match on his serve. It came down to who could outclass their opponent in tiebreaks, with Tursunov claiming a tough straight sets victory 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).
The women’s final proved to be more of a contest, lasting two and a quarter hours. It was world number one versus world number two in a match that went the distance, with Henin prevailing over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 for her fortieth career title on Friday.
Attention is now moved to Melbourne, where the first gram slam of the year the Australian Open starts on Monday.
