The seeds are continuing to tumble in the men’s singles draw of the Australian Open; the latest casualties are sixth seed Andy Roddick and seventh seed Fernando Gonzalez. Both have lost their third round singles matches within the last twenty four hours.

The final match of day five saw American Andy Roddick take on twenty-ninth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.  The match went the distance, going for five gruelling sets which saw two tie breaks and an extended fifth set, with Kohlschreiber finally claiming the final set eight games to six in just under four hours.

Seventh seed Fernando Gonzalez, a finalist in last year’s Australian Open, was outclassed earlier today by world number fifty-seven and unseeded Croatian Marin Cilic, who had prior to 2008 never made the second round of the first grand slam of the year.

In the only other men’s matches to be completed today on a rain affected day six, James Blake came from two sets to love down to defeat Frenchman Sebastian Grosjean in five sets, while third seed Novak Djokovic lost just seven games in his match against American Sam Querrey.
