Fifth seed Maria Sharapova and the unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both have scored upsets during evening play on day nine of the Australian Open.
Sharapova conceded just four games against current women’s world number one Justine Henin. Although both players had the same amount of unforced errors, Sharapova had almost three times as many winners as her opponent; thirty to eleven.
The world number five on a comparative basis was equal to or better than Henin in every major statistic of the match, to claim a spot in the semi-finals in just under an hour and forty minutes.
Maria Sharapova (5) def Justine Henin (1): 6-4 6-0
The miracle run for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France has continued, by becoming the only unseeded player to progress to the semi finals in the men’s singles draw.
The world number thirty-eight again put on a stellar performance to knock out another seed, this time it was fourteenth seed Mikhail Youzhny.
The first and third sets of the match were both well contested, while the second was won by the Frenchman without conceding a game.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def Mikhail Youzhny (14): 7-5 6-0 7-6
Tsonga will play world number two Rafael Nadal for a spot in the men’s final, while Sharapova will verse Jelena Jankovic for a place in the women’s final.
