Within an hour of winning their first gold medal of the Olympics, Australia has won a bronze medal in the 4 x 100m women’s freestyle relay at the National Aquatic Centre in Beijing earlier this afternoon.

The Australian team, which consisted of Cate Campbell, Alice Mills, Melanie Schlanger and Libby Trickett, finished third behind the Netherlands (who broke the Olympic record), and the United States.

The Australian team had a finishing time of 3:35.05; the time was an Australian record.

Australia’s medal tally now stands at 1 Gold, 0 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Australia’s gold medal was won by Stephanie Rice earlier today after eclipsing the world record by almost 1.6 seconds in the 400m individual medley. Click here for more on this story.
