After rain delayed the majority of matches on the opening day of play, the draw cards have taken to the court on day three of the Beijing Olympics, none of whom disappointed.
Men’s world number one Roger Federer easily accounted for Russian Dmitri Tursunov in just 65 minutes, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile world number two Rafael Nadal had a tougher time in his first round encounter, needing three sets to defeat Potito Starace of Italy 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
In the women’s draw, it was time for the Williams sisters to shine with both Serena and Venus progressing to the next round.
Seventh-seed Venus accounted for Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in 73 minutes winning 6-3, 6-2, while fourth-seeded Serena lost just four games in defeating Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-3, 6-1.
The biggest upset of the day was women’s third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, losing in straight sets to China’s Li Na 7-6(5), 6-4.
