At half time it appeared that an upset was on the cards, but the Australian Hockeyroos have come from being three goals down to win 5-4 against South Korea in their opening pool match of the Beijing Olympics tonight.
Luck appeared to be on the Australian’s side, with a goal that may have been denied had it gone to the third umpire, as well as own goal six minutes from full time which set up the win for the Hockeyroos.
South Korea appeared dangerous and looked set to create a commanding victory after scoring four goals in the first half, but began to lose composure as the Hockeyroos clawed the three goal deficit back before hitting the lead with their fifth goal of the match.
Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray has rated the South Koreans as one of the two best sides competing in the women’s draw, regularly referring to the team as a dangerous foe in the months leading up to the Olympics.
The men’s side will later this evening play Canada; a match in which Australia is set to dominate.
