Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is expected to return to office as Spain’s political leader despite not having a fifty percent majority in votes.

With over ninety percent of votes counted, the socialist party hold an almost four percent lead over the conservative party. Having just under forty-four percent of the vote, Zapatero is expected to form political alliances with minorities to claim the majority and return to office.

In a speech to supporters at his campaign headquarters, Zapatero said “The Spanish people have spoken clearly and decided to start a new era.

“I will govern with a firm but open hand. I will govern for all, but do so thinking most of all of those in need.”

Zapatero is acknowledged as being one of the few political leaders continually ensuring the progression of gay rights, with the legalization of same-sex marriages and adoptions in the last four years.  The Prime Minister has also vowed to fight any opposition towards the laws, which is expected to continue from the conservative party.
