American explorer Will Steger plans to lead an international team of young explorers on an expedition to the Canadian Arctic early next year in an effort to draw attention to signs of global warming.
Steger's team of six explorers will use dogsleds to trek 2,252 kilometres across fjords, mountain ranges and ice shelves, leaving time-lapse cameras on northern Ellesmere Island to document retreating glaciers and other apparent signs of global warming.
The explorers, aged 21 to 28, are from Norway, Great Britain, Canada and the United States and include not-so-straight Sam Branson, son of British mogul Richard Branson.
The 60-day expedition will take place in April and May, Steger's foundation said, and will be documented on a website that will be launched next month.
"My team is composed of some of the brightest young explorers in the world," Steger, who has trekked to the North Pole and Antarctica, said in a news release. "They continue to inspire my efforts to solve global warming and will serve as excellent role models for their generation."
Sam Branson has trained as a chef at Le Cordon Bleu and then went on to do a year's diploma in music. Since he was young he has always had a love for extreme sports, ranging from racing motocross to surfing.
