Gay marriage rejected in Portugal

Published Oct 14, 2008

Yesterday Portugal's parliament rejected a proposal to legalise gay marriage.

An overwhelming majority of deputies from the governing Socialist party and the opposition Social Democrats voted against two bills backed by the small Left Bloc and Verdes (Green) parties to reverse an existing ban on same-sex marriages.

Gay groups claim that they still suffer discrimination and would continue to fight for equal rights with heterosexual couples.
