The Cambridge Chronicle has reported that US history has been made by the election of the country’s first openly gay female black mayor.
Denise Simmons, a member of the City Council for Cambridge, has been elected as mayor by her peers after being a member of the board for nearly seven years.
CEO of the Victory Fund Chuck Wolfe described Simmons’ victory as “another broken glass ceiling,” and said “We are enormously proud of Mayor Simmons. Like Mayor Ken Reeves before her, she is among our community's trailblazers.”
Simmons will be the successor to Ken Reeves, who has served three terms as mayor. Reeves is also gay and black.
