Monogamy are we really made for it?

Monogamy?

If you still believe in fairytales, your lady in shinning armour will come looking for you, she’ll climb the full length of your 4 cm hair everyday for about three months and you’ll both eat out far more than three times a day. Then…you’ll fall down the hill and into Jac, Jill’s ex lover and the rest will be herstory, or just a story, depending on your gender politics.

Or, you’ll met Jac and Jill at the top, otherwise known as “Blonde on the rocks” (insert your cities local lesbian bar), you’ll all go home together, reach nirvana all at once and live happily ever after between each other legs and divinely connected heads watching re-runs of the L word, sipping freshly made (soy) chai and participating in group cooking of lentil burgers and brown rice.

You know what they say, variety is the spice of life so jump on the love train

Or, maybe on a day like any other, you’ll be strutting down the street and the elation of love will slip just long enough for you to see the passing “hottie” and realise that there is life outside your relationship and it’s not only your girlfriend’s tongue that can make you throb harder than an ageing suburban bus. This will be a defining moment; the body’s expression of its natural attraction towards more than one person; a predilection towards varied and multiple experience; desires never ending story part two-thousand-one-hundred-and-ninety-six.

Cos let’s face it, we all look.  We’re brought up in a culture of voyeurism; you just gotta grab a glance. Take the L word as an example; why is it so popular? Cos we all love watching hot girls have amazing sex and pretending, just pretending that our next girlfriend will be as drool worthy as Shane, as smart as Bette or as funny as Alice.

The statistics really do speak for themselves; one in 3 marriages end in divorce and the rate is climbing…why? People get bored, relationships are hard and monogamy is essentially based on ownership and having exclusive rights over another person’s body.

You know what they say, variety is the spice of life so jump on the love train and try selfless loving where love really is free and outside of rules and obligations. Freedom is a necessity and if you can create a situation where the love you have for each transcends monogamy’s monotonous gravy train I reckon you’re doing alright- you only live once eh!
