Last night on the eve of today's New Hampshire presidential primary, I was driving to pick up some food. On my way around the corner, I noticed the car in front of me with the following bumper sticker:

Of course, this bumper sticker is referring to the date that the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court swears in the new President of the United States of America. Truly, this date will not only be the end of an error, but also the start of a new era. Tonight, Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama lead the Democratic Party's nomination in New Hampshire. A woman and an African American. What a day today is!
1-20-2009: The End of an Error
On July 4th, 1776 the founders of our country wrote in their Declaration of Independence that All Men Are Created Equal. By men, they meant exactly that -- white males (who mostly owned land or slaves). Indeed, this definition has changed significantly in the past 232 years. Today, a woman and a black man are running for America's highest office. Women were granted the right to vote in 1920 and African Americans were not fully extended all voting rights until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, almost 190 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
There is a change in this country coming, the feeling in the air is palpable. We are on the dawn of a new era in this country, someone besides a rich white man may soon become our leader -- more than just a person running the country, but truly a leader. Today is a great day to be an American.
God Bless America!
