Love Geography

Published Jan 9, 2008
Is love everywhere? or should we migrate to find it?

John Lennon once wrote that all you need is love. But is love everywhere? Or are you more likely to find love in a city than in the rural area? Are you more likely to find love in certain countries or continents? Is Melbourne or Milan, Tokyo or Toronto, Sydney or San Francisco a better place for love? I could not help but wonder if love had geography?

I was thinking about this after my conversation with David a friend from Queensland. He thought it was harder for gay men to find love in Sydney. Sydney queens are known as the bitchiest queens after LA queens (definitely the bitchiest in the southern hemisphere). Gay relationships in this city last an average of 1.2 months and open relationships are as common as broadband internet. But there were so many gay men and so many scenes. Was David right? Was I more likely to find love in Brisbane or Melbourne? Or Perth?

Could it be as easy as a pure mathematical equation? More single people available = more likely to find love. Maybe or maybe not…take America for example. 300 million people, but over 43% of them are single. Compare that to Australia: 20 million people and over 28% of them are single. Now if we could only have a large scale speed dating session!

So maybe more does not mean more love…maybe it’s quality and not quantity. Less distractions…some of the longest partnered couples I know live in smaller cities (under 2 million). Coincidence? Maybe? Cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco have the highest rates of single people. Sydney tops the list in Australia.

My friend Ted is considered exotic in London. He’s now happily partnered living with the boy of his dreams. Yet in Sydney, he was single for over a decade believing that Asian males were discriminated by the Sydney scene. Was he right? He tells me leaving was the best thing he ever did. In the past, people moved to search for a better live. Are we now moving for love? Are we love migrants? Going from city to city hoping to find that special someone!

Mass consumption or economics? Either way, there is no place with more men than China. Today, around 120 boys are born in China for every 100 girls, the worst gender imbalance in modern human history. Within 15 years, China will have 30 million men who cannot find wives or husbands. So start packing your bags and learning Mandarin….Ni hao! WEI!
