Why are we so quick to label someone in the media a lesbian? And how on earth does their sexual orientation affect their opinions?
A recent article in GayWired.com about Lindsay Lohan’s lesbian rumours has really pissed me off.
The article writes: “Rehab queen Lindsay Lohan was asked by OK! Magazine what she thought about Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy and simply replied: "Not much. Why do people think it's such a big deal?" Well, if the gossip is true that Lohan would rather 'do lunch' with the ladies, then she probably isn't pondering any fears she'll end up the next knocked up teen icon.”
In addition to such blatantly unrealistic comments, the fact that this person has linked Lindsay’s sexuality to her opinions on teen pregnancy is ludicrous
First of all, let’s stop to take a look at what we think we know, as human beings who partake in the media circus. As a gay woman or not, I don’t really give a shit whether Lindsay is gay, straight or anywhere in between. And as media aimed at the GLBTIQ community, should we really be parading ourselves as extremely judgmental and gullible? It’s ok to report that the rumours are flying, but to go so far as to give them credibility?
Surely we all know that girls grow up holding each others hands in high school, that they go to clubs and they pash their girlfriends for the attention of the guys in the room. That they get drunk at partys and play spin the bottle and end up kissing other girls. All of this has become part of the culture. Lohan, at only 21 years of age, is indeed a part of that culture. And then there is the possibility that she is trying to work herself out, which would be consistent with her current behaviour over the past couple of years.
In addition to such blatantly unrealistic comments, the fact that this person has linked Lindsay’s sexuality to her opinions on teen pregnancy is ludicrous. I am a lesbian, therefore I don’t care about teenage pregnancy? I don’t sleep with men therefore don’t risk becoming pregnant, so I don’t care about someone else doing so? Preposterous.
And then, to have reveled in the possibilities of her sexual orientation and made such crude allegations on her personal stance on a matter, the final paragraph of the article speaks of Lohan recently spotted kissing a man.
“However, though lesbian rumors have been swirling around Lohan for some time, she's still making the guy rounds as well. Lohan and 24-year-old graphic artist/actor Spencer Guilburt were spotted in a lip lock recently at a Los Angeles restaurant, according to the Daily Mail.”
It doesn’t make sense to me. But moreso, it’s angered me because it was published on a Gay focused website, who should have more understanding about the matter to go making such comments. Of course we all want to know when the next celebrity is outed, or who was caught snogging who. And we report it. But maybe instead of having a bitch about it all and cutting members of our own community down, we should have some understanding and compassion.
