Ok, so this morning stories broke about Missy Higgins' revelations in a recent interview that she is ‘not so straight’. This comes a couple of months after speaking the GenQ Lifestyle Editor, Jadan Loughran. And GenQ readers the world over know that the GenQ slogan is “for the ‘not-so-straight’ individual.”
This got me thinking about the coming out process and how the use of labels is changing. From what I have read, despite appearing on the cover of a lesbian magazine, her not so straight comment has not landed her in the land of the lemon. Rather, people are just accepting that she might be bisexual.
This seems to be all very new to me. It is my experience that when a women mentions she isn’t straight, or that she has a girlfriend, people automatically assume she is a lesbian. But Missy has labeled herself as not-so-straight, and qualified that by saying that she believes sexuality is fluid (a nod to Shane, and yes, I agree), indicating that she floats somewhere along the line of heterosexual to homosexual.
In the past as we have seen, a validated intermediate point in the coming out process is for people to label themselves ‘bisexual’, when they either aren’t sure what they are, or they don’t want the discrimination associated with being ‘gay’. It’s the mid-way point between denial and acceptance. Some would say, it’s the easy way out. I can see why homosexuals coined the phrase ‘bi now, gay later’. But I also think there is no denying that for a lot of people, the land if bisexuality is a journey end point, not a tunnel to gayville.
I think that GenQ is onto something. ‘Not-so-straight’ could be the new bisexual. It’s a label, yes, but a non-definitive one. I mean, what exactly does, not so straight mean? I guess the only thing people can surmise from it, is that you aren’t exclusively heterosexual. Welcome to the majority of the world’s population. In fact, if we were getting ahead of ourselves and thinking clearly outside the box, we could be witnessing the beginning of a sexual identity revolution. Notice I just said, Majority. I’d be so bold as to speculate, that by labeling yourself ‘not-so-straight’, you are placing yourself in a majority. How’s that for new territory? There’s no end to the impact this might have, if it catches on.
So, I say we embrace the GenQ way. Embrace the not-so-straight culture, it’s attitude, it’s vibrancy and innovation. Jump on board with us at GenQ, Missy Higgins and countless hundreds of thousands who visit us monthly, and let’s get this revolution happening!
